Hericium americanum - bear's head tooth - is a close relative of lion's mane, forming long, branching tendrils of icicle-like spines rather than a single rounded head. It is a hardwood species, fruiting on beech, oak, maple, and hickory, and is prized both for the table and for its striking form.
HA-001 was found dried inside a hickory in the off-season in Upshur County, West Virginia, then revived in culture - a testament to its resilience. This line produces dense flushes and carries the toughness of an isolate that survived where others wouldn't.
